This report includes John Lewis employs over 84,000 employees, all of whom are partners in the company. The company has annual gross sales over £11bn (Knowledge, 2013). Organisation effectiveness depends on various aspects such as having the right people in the right job at the right time. Organisational effectiveness can be achieved through Human Resource Management (HRM), defined by Bratton, J. & Gold, J, (2003) as “a strategic approach to managing employment relations which emphasizes that leveraging people’s capabilities is critical to achieving sustainable competitive advantage, this being achieved through a distinctive set of integrated employment policies, programmes and practices” According to this definition, human resource management should not only deal with recruitment or pay, but also the maximization of the organisation’s human resource usage on a more strategic level. The role of HR is recognizing key gaps within the organisation and when it focuses on the right gaps it has a significant impact on the organisations results, it also influences managers to focus on the key gaps that are causing in-effectiveness within the organisation (Organizational Effectiveness as HR Role – HRM Guide, no date)Achieving high levels of competence and competitiveness within an organisation depends on human resource management practices to work effectively towards their goal, mission and vision. One of the most important aspects in the process of HRM is performance appraisal (PA). All the information gathered through PA gives the core for recruitment and selection, training and development as well as motivating and retaining a high quality workforce through rewarding the employees performance properly. A reliable PA system will highly enhance organisational effectiveness, as it would be difficult to focus on the organisation’s growth and future development without it (Groenewald, 2009).HR’s roles and functions in management structure focuses on providing the right tools and facilitating managers to become better at what they do. HR supports innovations, talent development and new approaches to boost the individual’s performance (HR Roles and Responsibilities – HRM Guide, no date).Regarding HR’s contribution to business ethics and accountability, John Lewis follow a set of professional ethics based on their principles, which determine how the employees act and the brand personality that best describes the employees. All partners at John Lewis treat their customers with respect, honesty and secure their trust and loyalty through their outstanding service (Knowledge, 2017). HR may be involved in imposing ethics programme and embedding its message. HR can also help senior leadership with monitoring how well the ethical values are embedded through reporting on ethics to the chairman. Also, HR could introduce some activities in order to familiarize the employees with ethical issues such as data protection act (Business ethics and the role of HR | Factsheets | CIPD, 2017).
